Winterizing Your Doors

Cold weather is here, and it’s important that you make sure that all your doors are sealed properly so you can stay warm and save money on your energy bills.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, up to 30 percent of your energy use can escape through unsealed doors and windows.  (HYPERLINK: https://www.energy.gov/) Here are some tips to winterize your doors and windows this season:

1. If you feel a draft in your home, but can’t find the source, look around the doorframe during the day and see where the sunlight is entering.

2. Place weather stripping around your doors. You can use vinyl-coated foam or a rubber strip.

3. Place caulk in all visible cracks and holes, and be sure to check for openings from the inside and outside.

4. Add a draft guard or towel between the bottom of your door and the floor.

5. When you close the door, lock the deadbolt to reinforce the door’s seal.
